The North Carolina School of Protocol and Etiquette held its first tea at The Morning Glory Inn, in downtown Clayton, on February 16, 2019. It was a wonderful day. Participants took part in a brief presentation on the history of tea, tea protocol, and a tea themed scavenger hunt.
Mrs. Betsy Grannis provided a wonderful tea that was accentuated by beautiful floral arrangements and tasty treats. A full afternoon tea was enjoyed by those in attendance. Afternoon tea consists of a sweet, a savory, and scones. Each of these courses were represented and much more for our enjoyment. We were also treated to beautiful classical music by the talented Mrs. Anna Jane Murray. She entertained, with poise and grace, for nearly two hours, during tea. It was truly reminiscent of days gone by.
The most magical thing about the day was the way that people listened attentively, used their best manners, put away their phones, and enjoyed the moment together. Complete strangers held light conversation and truly made an effort to get to know each other. This is the way that tea has always been intended and we recaptured it on a rainy afternoon in Clayton, NC.
We even had a young lady present. I am so proud of the fact that she was there and demonstrated a pure interest in learning how to take tea. I believe our youth deserve more of our attention and our best behavior. On this date, this young lady was blessed by the time and attention of all adults who were present. She participated in polite, social conversation and did a fine job of it. I hope she will cherish this memory of her childhood and use the skill of polish, that she learned at tea, in her future.
Tea has always had a way of bringing people together for polite conversation and it always will. Thank you to all who helped make the day possible. We look forward to doing it again.
